Jim Davidson goes doorstepping for the Tories

Diners at a Toby Carvery were surprised to see a familiar face interrupt their meal yesterday.

For Jim Davidson was out campaigning for the Tories in rain-sodden Derby North. And after he emerged from the eaterie in Chaddesden, he told reporters: 'That's another two Conservative votes we wouldn't have had.'

The controversial comic was in the constituency to knock on doors to canvass support for Conservative candidate Amanda Solloway.

He said he was helping out as she had been supportive of his Care After Combat veterans' charity. And he said: 'Just because you're working class – like wot I is – doesn't mean you can't vote Conservative. It's never let me down.'

Solloway is the second most marginal constituency in the UK, with Solloway defending a majority of just 41. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling also joined her and Davidson on the campaign yesterday.
