Comedies shine in the morning and late at night

...according to Netflix research

Viewers prefer comedy early in the morning and late at night, streaming service Netflix has reported.

They said that analysis of its viewing data showed that subscribers are 34 per cent more likely to be watching a comedy at 6am than at any other time of the day.

Dramas are more popular in the day and thrillers in traditional primetime slots – with viewers turning more to comedies at around 11pm.

Family comedies such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Fuller House and How I Met Your Mother were most popular in the morning, with more adult fare such as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Master of None and BoJack Horseman taking over late at night.

The findings come from analysis of viewing data across 22 countries, including the UK.

Cindy Holland, vice-president of original content at Netflix, said: ‘We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviours that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule.’

‘Gone are the days of every household waking up to the same breakfast TV programming on their screens. When viewing schedules are set by people and not programmers, lunchtime becomes no bingeing exception.’
