John Thomson hailed a 'legend' at the NW Comedy Awards
John Thomson and Sarah Millican were among the winners at the North West Comedy Awards last night.
But the biggest winner was Liverpool’s Hot Water Comedy Club and its regular MC Paul Smith.
The venue was named best club, with Smith winning for both best host and for best solo show for Hiya Mate, which filled the Echo Arena in his hometown last year.
Together Smith and the club won the social media award, having harnessed the internet to become a success. And it seems they were able to mobilise their fans to clean up at last night’s ceremony – held at the Frog And Bucket – too.
Thomson scooped the legend award while Millican won the TV comedian category.
Other winners include Dan Nightingale, who was named best act; Callum Oakey, who said he was ‘absolutely buzzing’ to win the breakthrough category and The Delightful Sausage who won best alternative act. Chris Cantrill and Amy Gledhill tweeted that they were ‘absolutely thrilled and grateful to everyone who voted’.
