Rhod Gilbert makes a return to stand-up
Rhod Gilbert is making a return to stand-up after more than six years away.
The comic has today been named in the line-up of the Wells comedy festival in May, and also has a three-night engagement at Machynlleth earlier that month.
Both engagements are billed as ‘work-in-very-early’ progress gigs for a possible 2019 tour.
His last tour, The Man with the Flaming Battenberg Tattoo was in 2012, and apart from the occasional benefits show he has concentrated on his TV and radio work, including the BBC Wales programme Rhod Gilbert's Work Experience, and his recent documentary about shyness.
Speaking to WalesOnline last month, Gilbert said that Machynlleth would be ‘a very early' work in progress show, adding that he would then do ‘a few under-the-radar, low-key gigs - a pub in Abergavenny in front of 50 people, for example’ with plans to go on a full tour next year.
Also announced for the Wells Comedy Festival today was the godfather of alternative comedy Alexei Sayle, The Mash Report’s Nish Kumar, Newsjack host Angela Barnes, Harry Potter actress Jessie Cave, and Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches.
They join previously announced acts such as James Acaster, Limmy, Sara Pascoe, Tim Key, Mark Watson and Richard Herring visiting Britain’s smallest city on the weekend of May 25-27.
Founder Ben Williams said: ‘This is another huge year for the Wells Comedy Festival, nearly doubling in size compared to 2017. I couldn’t be happier with the new additions to the line-up.’
Tim Lethaby, editor of the Wells Journal – the festival’s official media partner – said: ‘There really is comedy for everyone, even people with a terrible sense of humour, like me.’
Tickets are on sale now from www.wellscomfest.com.
