West End role for Mel Giedroyc

Comic joins Sondheim’s Company

Mel Giedroyc is to join the cast of forthcoming West End musical Company.

The comedian and former Bake-Off host will play Sarah in the revival of  Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical comedy.

The  plot revolves around Bobbi, a single woman unable to commit to a steady relationship, and the five married couples who are her best friends.

And, aptly, Sarah is a foodie who’s supposedly now dieting, but with a weakness for brownies.

Director Marianne Elliott  said Giedroyc had ‘all the qualities I was looking for in the role of Sarah. She is a unique and gifted comic actress and another amazing and talented woman to add to the cast. I can’t believe my luck – we are going to have so much fun.

The show also stars Rosalie Craig and Patti LuPone and will run  at the Gielgud Theatre from September 26.

Company originally revolved around a male character, Bobby, and this is the first time it has been reimagined as a woman.

Giedroyc was last seen on stage in Luce at Southwark Playhouse in 2016.
