This Is Going To Hurt up for another award
Adam Kay’s medical memoirs have been shortlisted for a major prize for debut biographies.
This Is Going to Hurt, which charted the musical comedian’s time as a junior doctor from 2004 to 2010, is up for the £2,500 Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize.
The book painted a comic picture of management incompetence and personal sacrifices in the NHS, as well as the highs and lows of dealing with patients, and is currently being adapted into a possible TV series.
It has already won the Books Are My Bag Readers’ Choice Award and became a Sunday Times bestseller after its publication last autumn.
The other books shortlisted are biographies of David Jones by Thomas Dilworth, Angela Carter by Edmund Gordon; Catherine Howard by Gareth Russell; Edward Garnett by Helen Smith and Kenneth Clark by James Stourton. Aside from Henry VIII’s fifth wife, all the other subjects are writers themselves.
The winner will be announced in London on May 6.
