Lovdev Barpaga has been crowned this year's UK Pun Champion at the Leicester Comedy Festival.

The Birmingham-based comedian, who styles himself as the  'Pun'jabi Warrior, contested the title inside a boxing ring specially erected for the eight-comic showdown.

His winning puns included:

• I think my Colombian neighbour's a drug lord, but I just cartel.

• Never fly with Sikh airways. Get nothing but turbanlence.

• If a bullfighter dies, does it Matador?

• My mother can’t stop talking about her famous curry. The saaga continues.

• Pakistani Pirates. Urdu they think they argh?

Hosted by Jason Byrne the final was held at the 900-seater De Montfort Hall, a venue four times larger that the previous two years’ events. 

Newcastle’s Julian Lee was runner-up and the other contestants were  Iain MacDonald from Glasgow;  Samantha Baines from London; Colin Leggo from Cornwall; Nigel Lovell from London; four-time finalist Richard Pulsford from Fife; and ‘Prop-Meister’ Roger Swift from Shropshire. 

Leicester Comedy Festival runs until February 26, with more than 770 events across its 19 days.
