America set to remake the ITV sitcom

America is making its own version of Benidorm – based in Mexico.

The new show will be called The Big Package, and revolve around a working-class Boston family  who take a holiday they can't afford at a third-rate resort.

In development at the Fox network, the adaptation will run for half an hour, rather than the hour of the ITV original.

Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler, who were showrunners of the MTV teen comedy series Awkward, will be adapting the show from Derren Litten’s original scripts.

The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, says the network would be looking to launch the show next summer.

Benidorm has won two National Television Awards and at its 2011 peak was watched by 8.6million viewers.

The eighth series launched with 6.5 million consolidated viewers earlier this year. A ninth run has been commissioned for 2017.
