When is the new season of Black Mirror?

Netflix reveals release date and episode details

Netflix has announced that the next season of Black Mirror will drop on October 21.

The series comprises six episodes written by Charlie Brooker, who is also executive producer with his long-term collaborator Annabel Jones.

The on-demand broadcaster has also released cast and title deals of the new instalments.

• San Junipero features Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis and isdirected by Owen Harris
• Shut Up and Dance features Jerome Flynn and Alex Lawther and is directed by James Watkins
• Nosedive features Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve and James Norton and is directed by Joe Wright
• Men Against Fire stars Michael Kelly, Malachi Kirby and Madeline Brewer and isdirected by Jakob Verbruggen
• Hated in the Nation features Kelly MacDonald and is directed by James Hawes
• Playtest feature Wyatt Russell and Hannah John-Kamen and is directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

Netflix says: 'Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia. '

But Brooker told the Television Critics Association: 'Technology is never the villain in the show,. It’s about human failings and human messes.'

Last year, the broadcaster announced it had ordered 12 more episodes, at a reported cost of $40million, having been home to the first two series in the States.

The deal caused upset at Channel 4, the original broadcaster, which failed secure the UK and Ireland rights it wanted.

Chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: ' We grew it from a dangerous idea to a brand that resonated globally. Of course it’s disappointing that the first broadcast window in the UK is then sold to the highest bidder, ignoring the risk a publicly owned channel like 4 took backing it.'

Programme-maker Endemol Shine, co-owned by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox, said they had 'explored every avenue with Channel 4', adding the broadcaster had been given the chance to recommission it since 2013.
