Red Dwarf XI: The first picture

Sci-fi comedy returns in September

The first picture has been released of the Red Dwarf cast back in their characters, four years after their last outing.

Series XI will start in September, the Dave channel has announced, with  Danny John-Jules as The Cat, Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.

The channel has also released some of the plot details of the new run of six episodes.

They say: ' Rimmer accidentally saves the life of a Space Corps Captain and is promoted to Officer, while Cat takes time off from being in love with himself to fall in love with a female Cat with a secret.

'Meantime Lister wakes up to discover a deranged droid has stolen some of his body parts and Kryten has a mid-life crisis and considers leaving the Dwarfers for a younger crew. The posse also find themselves in an alternative America where modern technology is outlawed making both Kryten and Rimmer illegal.'

The series, which was written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor and recorded in front of a live audience at Pinewood Studios, also promises a raft of guest stars.

Dave has been the home Red Dwarf since 2009, a decade after the BBC stopped making the show. The three-part comeback Back To Earth special remains the UK’s biggest ever non-terrestrial commission.

The broadcaster has also ordered a 12th series, which will air next year.
