BBC confirms return of Peter Kay's Car Share

Just four episodes in 2017

The BBC has confirmed that Peter Kay’s Car Share will be returning for a second series – but for just four more episodes.

And fans will have to wait until next year to see them.

The series will also premiere in its entirety on BBC iPlayer before its BBC One broadcast, as the first season did.

Kay had previously revealed the show had been commissioned, and he and co-star Sian Gibson had been spotted filming in Salford last month.

Series one climaxed with a ‘will they won’t they’  moment between their characters John and Kayleigh as their chemistry grew.

Kay said today: ‘What a joy to be working on the second series of Car Share with the wonderful Sian Gibson. The success of the first series has been completely overwhelming.’

Gibson added: ‘I’m really excited that Car Share is coming back. We had so much fun making the first series and I can’t wait to be Kayleigh Kitson again.’

Car Share was the first-ever series to premiere on BBC iPlayer in its entirety before its terrestrial broadcast, and received three million views in its first four days alone.

On BBC One, it attracted six million viewers and scooped awards including Best Comedy at the National Television Awards and Best Scripted Comedy at the Bafta.

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s  controller of TV channels, said: ‘Car Share broke the mould, innovated and took risks in comedy on primetime BBC One - a show that epitomises what the channel is all about. I can’t wait for the Bafta-award-winning series to return.’

And Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning, added: ‘There is so much more to explore between John and Kayleigh. The writing on the new series is sublime – intimate, poignant and hilarious.’

Series two is written by Paul Coleman, Sian Gibson and Peter Kay, who also directs – which means co-creator Tim Reid has left the writing team.
