Griff Rhys Jones returns to the West End

In Moliere's The Miser

Griff Rhys Jones is to return to the stage for the first time in more than six years.

The comedians and presenter will be starring a revival of Molière’s classic comedy The Miser when it opens next year.

To be staged at the Garrick Theatre, the new production has been  adapted by Sean Foley, who directed Graham Linehan’s version of The Ladykillers and Rob Brydon in The Painkiller as well as co-creating the Morecambe and Wise tribute comedy The Play What I Wrote.

It is one of two West End plays he is set to direct. The other is a revival of Ronald Harwood’s play The Dresser starring Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith.

Set in a regional theatre in wartime Britain, the play was  made into a 1983 film starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. This new production of The Dresser will preview at The Duke of York’s Theatre from October 5 following performances in Richmond, Brighton and Cheltenham.

It will be followed by The Miser, a collaboration with playwright Phil Porter, previewing at the Garrick Theatre from March 1, following runs at Bath’s Theatre Royal and Richmond Theatre.

Rhys Jones was last seen in the West End playing Fagin in Oliver! from 2009 to 2011. He has won two Olivier awards for best comedy performance, a decade apart: for Charley’s Aunt in 1984 and An Absolute Turkey in 1994. He also appeared as Toad in The Wind in the Willows at the National Theatre  in 1990.
