Gary: Tank Commander Political Interviewer

Move over Andrew Marr

Gary: Tank Commander is returning to television … as a political interviewer.

Ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections on May 5, Greg McHugh's camp squaddie has questioned the party leaders in a pre-recorded special for BBC Two Scotland.

Gary Tank Commander's Election Special will see the unlikely interlocutor grill First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, as well as Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, the Conservative's Ruth Davidson, the Liberal Democrats Willie Rennie, the Greens' Patrick Harvie and UKIP's David Coburn in separate interviews.

SNP leader Sturgeon posted a photograph of herself posing with the perma-tanned corporal last Tuesday and Gary tweeted: 'Honestleh!! Ah hud mare fun than a thought speakin tae the radge leaders ay Scotland's political parties the day!! Whit a cheekeh bunch!!'

Clips from the interviews will begin appearing on social media from tomorrow, with the show airing at 10pm on Monday night on BBC Two Scotland,

The extracts will appear online as part of BBC Scotland's Short Stuff strand, which has already featured videos from Richard Gadd, Mark Nelson and Scot Squad star Grado.

Gary: Tank Commander ran for three series on BBC One and Two in Scotland between 2009 and 2012, transferring to BBC Three for a UK-wide broadcast.

McHugh has occasionally performed the character live at charity benefits in recent years but will present his biggest shows yet with a three-night run of Gary: Tank Commander: Mission Quite Possible at Glasgow's 13,000 seater SSE Hydro in October, following the successful adaptation of Still Game at the venue in 2014.

Currently appearing in the BBC One autism drama The A Word, McHugh also stars alongside Warren Brown in the football comedy film Kicking Off, in cinemas on Thursday.
