He's in a New York club tonight

Robert De Niro is to perform stand-up in a New York club tonight.

His set will be filmed for his upcoming movie, The Comedian, in which he plays a veteran insult comic.

Rather than set up the scenes in a movie studio, Method actor De Niro will face the genuine crowd of the Village Underground, sister of the famous Comedy Cellar.

The 11pm show otherwise offers a normal bill, with Jessica Kirson, Aida Rodriguez and Sheng Wang and Greer Barnes all being introduced by Hannibal Buress.

But, unsurprisingly, tickets for the show – $15 plus a two-drink minimum – have long sold out.

De Niro's stand-up lines have been written by Jeffrey Ross, a regular on Comedy Central's roasts.

In the film, due out in February, King of Comedy star De Niro plays a stand-up know for his savage putdowns who befriends a younger woman, played by Leslie Mann. Nurse Jackie star Edie Falco also has a role.

De Niro has previously been filmed emerging from the Comedy Cellar, the same venue that features in the opening credits of Louis CK's comedy Louie:
