Steve Oram's film lands coveted nomination

Aaaaaaaah! – comedian Steve Oram's satire portraying humans as apes – has been nominated for a British Independent Film Award.

Oram's directorial debut, which he also wrote, has been shortlisted for the new Discovery Award, which recognises innovation and vision in lower-budget films.

The movie, whose cast includes Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt, Alice Lowe and Torah Wilcox, notably replaces dialogue with primate grunts and gestures. Read our review here.

Also nominated in this category are Burn Burn Burn, Orion: The Man Who Would Be King, The Return and Winter.

Another offbeat comedy, the sci-fi drama The Lobster, topped the list of nominations.

The film us nominated for best British independent film, best director, best screenplay and producer of the year. Colin Farrell is nominated for best actor and Olivia Colman and Ben Whishaw for their supporting roles.

Laurence Green, chairman of the awards board, said: 'Bifa's committed voters watched over 260 films this year – more than ever. After thousands of hours of viewing, nearly 30 jury meetings and two rounds of voting, their nominations cover a breathtaking range of British films and filmmaking talent. '

The winners will be announced at The Moët British Independent Film Awards on Sunday December 6 in London. For a full list of nominees visit www.bifa.film.
