'Happy' Howden dies

Comic had a 50-year club career

Scottish comedian Alex 'Happy' Howden has died, close to his 76th birthday.

He spent nearly 50 years playing working men’s clubs, where he had a reputation for never wanting to leave the stage. Born in Leith, he built a fan base in the north of England, but also frequently played Scotland’s Central Belt.

In a statement posted on Facebook yesterday, Howden’s daughter, Kathryn, said: ‘Our beautiful dad Alex ‘Happy’ Howden passed away yesterday, much too soon, we are all heartbroken.

‘He was the kindest, funniest and warmest man, and the best dad, husband and granddad ever. Our hearts are hurting, but full of love and memories...Love you dad always.’

He got into comedy after a career as a boxer, and in 1991, he released a video called Bald, Bold And Blue, recorded at various stag venues. A review on Amazon says: ‘Step aside Bernard and Chubby… Mr Politically Correct he ain’t.’

And away from the live circuit, he played Stan in Rab C Nesbitt, Priest in The Book Group and a hangman in Martin Scorsese’s film Gangs of New York.

Among those paying tribute last night were Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, who tweeted: ‘Very sad to hear about the death of Alex ‘Happy’ Howden. One of the nicest and funniest people it’s been my privilege to know.’

comedian Andy Cameron added: ‘So sorry to hear of the passing of Alex Happy Howden. Comic, Boxer, Whaler and Actor! What a character and what a life! Rest in Peace Alex."
