Swiss festival aims to find out

Comedy competitions have just gone global – as a hunt has been launched for the world's funniest comedian.

The Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland is to scour 120 countries across ten regions of the planet, including Africa, Russia, the Middle East, North America and Pacific Asia in its hunt.

The winners of each region will win a place at the grand Jokenation final at the event in December, where the best will compete for the global title.

Five of the regions – including the UK –  are for comics performing in English, and five for French-speakers in French and entries must be submitted by September 21.

Grégoire Furrer, the founder of the Montreux Comedy Festival said: 'Jokenation is one of the projects I really wanted to create after more than 25 years' experience in comedy around the world in all its various forms.

'With new technologies and globalisation, geographic and linguistic borders are disappearing. Joke nation is a pioneer project that is part of this new trend of comedy without borders.'

Comics must submit five-minute videos which are voted for by industry and experts and via an online poll. Each region then hosts a gala show when there winner is flown to the Swiss festival, where the English final takes place on December 4.
