Netflix snaps up Gervais's next movie

Special Correspondents to debut on demand

Ricky Gervais’s next movie is to be released on Netflix.

Special Correspondents stars Eric Bana as a radio journalist who fakes reports from a war in South America from a New York hideout, with Gervais as his sound engineer.

However, as the lies escalate and they fabricate their own kidnap, the pair have to smuggle themselves into the war zone, where they are hijacked for real.

The film – also written and directed by Gervais – will be released on the streaming service worldwide next year.

It is the latest move into feature films from Netflix, which also has deals for original movies from Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: ‘Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart. It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world.’

Gervais said: ‘Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It’s great to be part of the changing future. Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.’

After Special Correspondents has shot, Gervais will go on to make the David Brent rockumentary movie Life On The Road, about his Office character’s attempts to make it in the music business.

Special Correspondents is a remake of this French film:
