Superbob flies at comedy film fest

Award for Brett Goldstein's superhero

Suberbob – a film starring stand-up Brett Goldstein as a very British superhero – has won a top award at the London Comedy Film Festival.

The movie, which also features Catherine Tate, won the Discovery Award at the just-finished Loco festival.

It follows in the footsteps of previous winners including Black Pond – the dark comedy marking Chris Langham’s screen comeback and also starring Simon Amstell, which went on to win a Bafta nominations – and Wizards Way, which was shot for £300 and is now being remade by Jack Black.

Goldstein also wrote the script of Superbob with Will Bridges and director Jon Drever. It revolves around a mild-mannered postman from Peckham who was given superpowers when hit by a meteor – and is now an overworked ‘civil servant’, saving lives and filling out paperwork.

Judges said they were impressed with the ‘scale, ambition and sincerity of SuperBob, a uniquely British take on the superhero movie’.

The judges also awarded a special commendation to Sarah Warren, who directed and starred in a film called MLE, described as ‘a supersmart spy caper with a refreshing feminist twist’. They said her performance ‘lights up every scene’ of the movie.

The other shortlisted film was The Fitzroy directed by Andrew Harmer. It is a black comedy feature film set on a submarine hotel in an alternative post-apocalyptic 1950s.
