Tim Minchin adapts Groundhog Day for the stage

Collaboration with Matilda director

Tim Minchin is working on a stage adaptation of the classic Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day.

He is working with Matthew Warchus, who directed Matilda, and Danny Rubin, who wrote the original 1993 screenplay, to bring the film to life.

The first workshops towards the show will take place in the spring, but Warchus told the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye: ‘Tim and Danny have been working on it for a while.

‘I’ll decide where it should go — London or New York — once I see what kind of show it is. We won’t know until we run it through at a workshop.’

Warchus previously directed the unsuccessful stage version of the film Ghost, which some critics thought was too direct an adaptation, without enough theatricality.

Perhaps wary of falling into the same trap, he said of Groundhog Day: ‘It has to be something in its own right, not just a carbon copy.’

Minchin’s publicist confirmed that he was working on the show.

Meanwhile, Matilda, for which Minchin wrote the songs, has been nominated for Best West End Show in the Whatsonstage Awards, which is decided by public vote.
