BBC orders another series from Adil Ray

BBC One has commissioned a third series of Citizen Khan.

Another seven half-hour episodes of Adil Ray’s Birmingham-based sitcom have been ordered by BBC controller Charlotte Moore and comedy commissioner Shane Allen.

Announcing the news at a Bafta session today, Moore said the show had ‘established itself as a modern mainstream comedy hit’.

Ray added: ‘It’s testament to the whole team that we have got this far. I just can't wait to get back in the studio with the entire Citizen Khan family. As the great British public get even more familiar with Mr Khan, it really excites me when I think about the places we can go. The Bahamas?’

Although slated by critics – with one saying it was ‘stuck in a 1970s time warp’ –episodes attract solid audiences of around 2.8million viewers on their first screenings.

A Christmas special airs on BBC One on Friday December 20.
