Russell Brand's US talk show axed

Now he's working on a scripted comedy

Russell Brand’s American TV talk show is to be axed.

The FX network says it will not renew Brand X With Russell Brand, which ended its second series last week.

However, the broadcaster will continue to work with the stand-up – who announced a world tour today – working on a scripted live-action comedy.

The new show will be loosely based on the comedian’s life, which network boss John Landgraf likened to Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. The project is in the very early stages of development.

Brand X started off in 2012 as a taped weekly stand-up, but after attracting largely negative reviews moved to incorporate guests, including such controversial figures as the Westboro Baptist Church. It aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

The second series, which began in February, followed a more traditional chat-show format – going out live with with Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones acting as his sidekick.

In total, 26 episodes of Brand X aired.
