Minchin - and Matilda - up for Broadway awards

Tim Minchin has been nominated in the top awards for Broadway theatre.

His work on Matilda The Musical has earned him a nod for best original score in this year’s Tony Awards.

The New York production scooped an impressive 12 nominations, including best musical. Only Kinky Boots – an adaptation of the 2005 British film - has more, with 13.

Among Matilda’s other nominations are Bertie Carvel, who is up for best musical actor for playing headmistress Miss Trunchbull, as well as direction, choreography and orchestration.

And the four actresses who share the title role of Matilda - Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro – have been shortlisted for the Tony for Excellence In The Theatre.

Matilda won seven Olivier Awards in London last year, including best new musical.

The Tonys will be presented on June 9 at Radio City Music Hall, New York.
