However, Izzard might have some competition for his record claim from Russell Peters, whose Notorious World Tour launched in the Middle East in March.

Canadian Peters has today announced four UK dates for the tour in April – playing Birmingham LG Arena, London O2 Arena, Manchester Arena and Glasgow Clyde Auditorium – with tickets going on sale on Friday. priced £36.50 to £48.50.

Peters’ last special, The Green Card Tour was recorded in London’s O2 Arena in 2010 – a venue where he previously set a British record for the highest attendance for a one-off comedy show.

He has set venue records at Sydney’s Acer Arena and Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena, while Notorious has become the most-seen comedy show in countries across the Middle and Far East.
