'It's an homage'

Jerry Seinfeld's new show looks familiar...

Jerry Seinfeld has announced his next show – a remarkably similar idea to Robert Llewellyn’s Car Pool.

Seinfeld’s new project is called Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, in which he interviews his professional chums as they take a drive in one of his collection of vintage cars.

It is the same premise as Llewellyn’s show – which started on the internet before being picked up as an advertiser-funded show for Dave – but with the addition of coffee and a more expensive motor than the Toyota Prius Llewellyn drove.

But although the Red Dwarf star admitted he wasn’t receiving a penny from multi-millionaire Seinfeld, he said he wasn’t angry at his idea being stolen.

‘I see it as a homage rather than rip-off,’ he tweeted today. ‘Anyway, #carpool is hardly 100% original, small cameras in cars are now used all the time.’

However he did copy Seinfeld in on the tweets, and added: ‘That said, gimme a lift.’

Seinfeld yesterday posted up a teaser clip of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which simply showed him taking a ride with a guffawing Ricky Gervais.

Other set to take part in the series – which is set to debut on the Sony-owned Crackle internet channel on July 19 – include Larry David, Seinfeld co-star Michael Richards and 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin.

Seinfeld owns a reported 46 Porsches, including the first and last original Porsche 911s produced and a £500,000 Porsche 959, one of only 337 ever built.

Here is a longer trailer for the show:
