ITV pilots 'The Inbetweeners meets ancient Rome'

ITV2 has piloted a sitcom set in ancient Rome, starring Friday Night Dinner’s Tom Rosenthal.

Plebs, which has been co-written by Tom Basden, is said to be in the same ‘young, frivolous’ vein that made The Inbetweeners such as hit for rival channel E4.

The cast also includes Joel Fry, who appears in Sky 1’s Trollied, Adrian Scarborough, from Gavin & Stacey, and Smack the Pony’s Doon Mackichan.

Basden co-wrote the show with Sam Leifer, the head of comedy at Rise Films, which is making the show.

According to trade magazine Broadcast, ITV2 is ‘close’ to commissioning a full series, which would air next year.
