Another comic bypasses DVDs

Aziz Ansari offers direct $5 download

Yet another US comic is bypassing the DVD companies and offering his stand-up special as a direct download.

Aziz Ansari has joined Louis CK and Jim Gaffigan by offering Dangerously Delicious for a $5 download, after funding the production from his own website.

On his blog, the star of the sitcom Parks and Recreation wrote: ‘I filmed it at the Warner Theatre in DC in June of 2011. I paid for the production myself and wanted to release it online.

‘While I was trying to figure out the proper method of release, my friend and hilarious comedian Louis CK did his whole thing and it seemed to me that people really liked that model, so that was the route I decided to go.’

More than 220,000 people dowloaded Louis CK’s Live at the Beacon Theater in just ten days, bringing in more than $1.1 million; while Jim Gaffigan’s Mr. Universe is set to go on sale next month.

Aziz’s release of his special last night suggests the business model is here to stay.
