Gavin & Stacey to return

Ruth Jones reveals one-off special

Gavin & Stacey is to return, its co-writer Ruth Jones has revealed.

She is writing a one-off special to show how life turned out for her character Nessa and Smithy, played by co-writer James Corden.

Until now, the makers had indicated that the third series, which ended in January, was last.

Jones told fans in Barry, South Wales, where the series is set: ‘It looks like there will be a Gavin & Stacey special some time in the future. It will show how things worked out for Gavin and Stacey - and for Nessa and Smithy.’

But she rule out making another series, despite 500,000 fans signing an online petition calling for its return to BBC One.

However, there could be one obstacle to overcome as Corden is reportedly poised to sign a multi-million-pound deal to become one of the faces of ITV, following the success of his World Cup post-match shows. The contract, worth a reputed £6 million over three years, is likely to insist he appears exclusively on the network.
