Second series of Gervais show commissioned

The animated version of Ricky Gervais’s comedy podcasts has been recommissioned by America’s HBO network.

A second series has been announced today, with production on the new episodes beginning later this year, for broadcast in 2011.

The 13-episode first season of The Ricky Gervais Show is currently airing in the States until May 21 – and comes to Channel 4 from April 23.

It adds Hanna-Barbera-style animation to the existing audio footage of Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington bantering in the studio.

HBO executive Michael Lombardo said: ‘Ricky’s hilarious show has sparked a loyal and enthusiastic following that is growing steadily throughout the season, and we’re happy to bring the show back for another season. It will be fun to see what new insights Karl has.’

Gervais said: ‘With this second series we would have already done as many episodes as The Office and Extras put together. This can run and run as long as Karl remains a global village idiot.’
