Ade: Young Ones is 'tedious'

Edmondson slams his own show

It might have made him a star, but Adrian Edmondson has blasted The Young Ones as ‘boring’.

The Eighties sitcom has a reputation for fast-paced anarchy, but Edmondson says he can’t bear to watch repeats these days as it’s too sluggish and meaningless.

The 52-year-old said: ‘It is just so tedious when I look at it now. There are five-minute scenes which make no sense.

‘I put a DVD on for my kids and they watched for 15 minutes before complaining they were bored.’

One of Edmondson’s children with Jennifer Saunders, Beattie, is herself a comedian, featuring in the sketch troupe Lady Garden.

Meanwhile, Edmondson is to make his pantomime debut this Christmas.

He will be playing Captain Hook in Marlowe Theatre's production of Peter Pan – and he said his performance will be influenced by his best-known roles in Bottom and the Young Ones.

‘This will be my first panto, although performing Bottom live is a lot like being in panto,’ he said. ‘It will be hard not to bring the best elements of Vyvyan and Eddie Hitler into the role.’
