Brian ban lifted

Aberystwyth gets its Pyhton premiere – 30 years late

Aberystwyth has lifted its ban on Monty Python’s Life Of Brian – 30 years after its release.

The first screening – which will be attended by Michael Palin and Terry Jones – comes after a campaign by town mayor Sue Jones-Davies, who played Brian’s girlfriendin the film.

Burghers of the Welsh town originally ruled that the film was blasphemous, but no one since thought to revoke their decision.

‘It’s about time the film was shown,’ said Mrs Jones-Davies, pictured in her role as Judith Iscariot. ‘We decided we might as well go on with it

‘It was actually a journalist who pointed out to me that it had never been shown in Aberystwyth because of the ban.’

The ban had actually been swept away with a local government reorganisation in the Nineties, so no action was needed to overturn it now.

Life Of Brian will be screened in the town’s 120-seat arts centre on March 28, raising money for the British Heart Foundation and Truthout, a non-corporate news website.
