Student heats get under way

Best new comics vie for Chortle prize

Chortle's hunt for the best student comedian of 2009 begins in earnest this week, with the first two regional heats.

The contest kicks off in The Phoenix pub in Coventry on Tuesday, where 11 hopefuls will compete for a place in this summer's final , where they will have the chance to win the £1,000 top prize.

Last year's winner Jack Heal will also be performing at the gig, where last year he secured his place in the final. The show kicks off at 8.30pm and tickets are £2.50pm on the door.

On Wednesday, Manchester University Union will host the second heat, compered by 2009 Chortle Award nominee Dan Nightingale. Here, 12 of the region's finest student comics will be delivering their best material in a bid to reach the final.

Meanwhile, an additional heat has been added: At 22 Below , near Carnaby Street, Central London, on March 2.

Short extracts from each act will be posted on Chortle soon after each heat, with one place in the final up for grabs following a reader's vote for the best runner-up. Click here for the student award microsite.
