Amnesty benefit gig comfirmed

Amnesty International has confirmed the date and some of the line-up of this year’s Secret Policeman’s Ball.

The gig will be at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Saturday October  4, with a bill that includes Alan Carr, Shappi Khorsandi and Frank Skinner.

Tickets have gone on sale today for the event , which will mark the start of Amnesty’s celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Amnesty director Kate Allen said: ‘When you laugh at a joke along with lots of other people you realise they feel the same way you do. When the jokes have a political message it can help people realise that many others share their beliefs. This gives people the confidence to take action and that is exactly what we want.’

The Secret Policeman’s ball has its origins in a benefit set up by John Cleese in 1976. The first show to use the name was in 1979, and featured a young Rowan Atkinson. Follow-ups were held in 1981 and 1987.
