Carrs's a star...

Alan saves Fringe play

Alan Carr has stepped in to save a Fringe play when one of the cast members failed to turn up.

Actress Dawn Parylo failed to get to the Edinburgh performance of Shakers (Re-stirred) after being delayed in Glasgow, where she is filming a BBC documentary as Elizabeth I.

The other members of the all-female cast, stand-ups JoJo Sutherland, Karen Bayley and Janice Phayre, were preparing to make an announcement when Carr came to the rescue.

The star of Channel 4’s Sunday Night Project, who was in the audience, offered to read the part from a script, to the delight of the rest of the Fringe-goers

Sutherland said: ‘There were additional howls of laughter when the script requested him to say lines like, “Oh, I’ve come over all queer.”’

Carr had been due to appear with the same cast in last year’s ill-fated Guid Sisters production, which was cancelled following rows among the cast and producers.

Carr also made an unannounced stand-up appearance during his Edinburgh visit, performing a selection of new and untried material at the free midnight gig at the Espionage nightclub.
