Gavin & Stacey Airport?

Cardiff plans bizarre rebrand

Airport chiefs are said to be seriously considering rebranding Cardiff International as The Gavin and Stacey Airport.

Bosses hope to emulate the success of Liverpool, when Speke Airport was renamed after John Lennon.

And one suggestion is that it take the name of the BBC sitcom, with other possibilities including Zeta Jones International and Dame Shirley Bassey Gateway.

Local marketing expert said: ‘Cardiff International Airport – what does that say? It’s not a brilliant brand.’

But another Cardiff-based advertising executive, Jason Gill, warned that the new name should have gravitas.

He said: ‘It’s vital to get the right name. I would like to see the late Richard Burton or Roald Dahl be considered. I hope they don't succumb to the current celebrity-craved popcorn culture.’

The former RAF base was originally called Rhoose Airport when it started operating civilian flights.
