Stanhope announces UK dates

...and this time they're real gigs

Outspoken American comic Doug Stanhope is to perform a series of gigs in Britain this September.

He had previously announced a one-off ‘show’ at the Edinburgh Fringe – charging just one fan £7,349 for the privilege of spending 16 hours with him. The stunt was designed to demonstrate how much money the average comedian loses at the festival.

Now he has announced nine dates at London’s Arts Theatre and three more at Manchester’s Dancehouse Theatre.

Stanhope, who mixes volatile social criticism with graphic tales of being a ‘self-indulgent, drunken washout’, last visited the UK in 2006. Last year, he launched a bid to be a candidate for the US Presidency, but was thwarted by red tape

He is often compared to Bill Hicks, but Stanhope says: ‘I just got off the phone with my publicist, and if one more person calls me the heir to Hicks's throne, I get to sue his estate.’

Tickets for the London gigs have gone on sale today – click here to buy them – while Manchester tickets will be available from Monday.
