The actors were even given scripts with false endings as the producers didn’t want the cast knowing what happened.
Producer Gill Isles said that only the actors involved in the scene, including star Johnny Vegas, and a few crew members know what will happen.
A trailer for the series – below – shows Vegas’s character, small-time drug dealer Moz, lying in a pool of his own blood before being carried out on a stretcher. But this features in the first episode of the new series, which goes out on BBC Three at 10.30pm tonight, and is not the big finale.
The secrecy echoes the tactics of big-time soap operas, which occasionally film alternative scenes to resolve cliffhangers in a bid to keep fans – and the tabloids – guessing.
Writer Graham Duff said: ‘We wanted to keep the ending a secret from the cast as there is a massive plot twist. I don't think anyone will see it coming.’
Vegas added: ‘When we got the scripts, the very last scene was missing. It was only the day before filming that final scene that I found out what was going to happen.
‘I think most fans of the show will be shocked when they see it.’
