Dad's Army... but with terrorists

Chris Morris reveals his latest project

Chris Morris has revealed more details about his long-awaited next project – a comedy film about terrorism.

The Brass Eye provocateur says the movie will do for Islamic terrorism what Dad’s Army did for the Nazis –by showing them as ‘scary but also ridiculous’.

He told the Sunday Times: ‘Most of us would dearly love to laugh in the face of our worst fears. Why aren’t we laughing at terrorists? Because we don’t know how to, until now.

‘I don’t plan for this film to be offensive, but I do want it to be very funny. I accept, though, that some may find poking fun at terrorists is offensive.

‘There is this Dad’s Army side of terrorism and that’s what this film is exploring. This film will hopefully get over that terrorists do what we all do. They discuss the mundane, and plan things that sometimes then go wrong. People, that is viewers, are longing to laugh at terrorism.’

Morris, who is notoriously secretive about his work, intends to use genuine terrorist situations as inspiration, and has visited places in Britain associated with plots, including Leeds, Bradford and Luton.

Some of the more ludicrous stories to emerge from the subject, such as 9/11 ringleader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed spending two hours selecting clothes that would look fat before giving an interview; training camps jihadists accidentally shoot off each other’s feet, or a terrorist mistaking the explosive triacetone triperoxide for cocaine, and snorting it.

The £4million movie, funded by Channel 4 and Warp Films, will be shot in the spring.

Morris will direct the film – his first full-length movie - but he will not act in it
