My Life Of Brian regret

'We shouldn't have cut the Nazi Jew'

Terry Jones has said he regrets cutting a controversial scene from Life Of Brian, because it foreshadowed the current Middle East situation.

Eric Idle created a character called Otto, a ‘Jewish Nazi’ who wanted to cleanse Israel of all other faiths.

He led a suicide squad of disciples, all wearing a symbol that combined the Star of David with the swastika, who prove they are willing to lay down their lives for their cause.

Jones, who directed the film, said: ‘It was a very funny scene, but it wasn't relevant; it wasn't part of the story. When I took it out, the film just flowed so much better.’

But he added that he regrets his decision. ‘I think what it addressed is extremely relevant today with what's going on in Israel,’ he told the Daily Telegraph. ‘Eric put his finger on something; it was quite prophetic.’

Terry Gilliam has previously shared similar doubts. ‘I’m stil not sure cutting it out was the right thing,’ he told a Channel 4 documentary, ‘because I think that scene is really important.’

The ‘Nazi Jews’ do remain in the finished film, turning up to Brian’s crucifixition to commit mass suicide, but the scene establishing their motives remained on the cutting-room floor.

It has featured on a previous DVD release, as well as on a new ‘immaculate edition’ release.
