Norm's out to Grass

Cheers star joins Boycie sitcom

Cheers star George Wendt is to appear in Only Fools and Horses spin-off Green, Green Grass.

The 59-year-old, who played barfly Norm Peterson, will appear in the Christmas special as a former GI.

His character will visit Boycie's home village, where he was billeted in the Seventies, in search of the children he had following a string of affairs with locals.

A BBC spokeswoman said: ‘The writer John Sullivan got to know George and the Cheers cast in the Eighties when the US version of his comedy Citizen Smith was being filmed in the studio next door.’

June Whitfield is also joining the new series, which starts on BBC One on November 2, as Marlene’s mum Dora.

Actress Sue Holderness, who plays Marlene, said: ‘June is a heroine of mine. She’s an icon. She is 82 now but she is still so enthusiastic. She’s in two episodes and hopefully if there’s a fourth series will appear even more.’
