TV hunt for Wales's best new comic

BBC Wales is to launch a televised hunt for the best new Welsh comic – with £30,000-worth of gigs going to the winner.

The series, Funny Business, will visit three venues across the principality in the search for fresh talent – all of whom will have to impress comedy agent Ian Franklin.

Franklin’s company The Comedy Club – which runs venues as well as representing acts – previously featured on a BBC Three documentary with a very similar name, A Funny Business.

He said: ‘What I’m looking for is either someone who has been trying to break onto the comedy scene for a while and just hasn’t got there yet or someone that hasn’t necessarily done anything like this before and just wants to have a go.

‘Either way, I see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most people.’

Registration is open on the website from now until April 3, and auditions will take place in Wrexham on April 10, Cardiff on April 11 and Swansea on April 12. Everyone who takes part must either live in Wales or be of Welsh origin, and the winner will get a management contract with The Comedy Club for the £30,000 of performances.

The show is being made by Welsh production company Dai4 Films, which also made the previous documentary about Franklin’s firm.
