C4 wants Eejits

New sitcom from Arthur Mathews

Father Ted creator Arthur Mathews is writing a new comedy for Channel 4.

The sitcom, which has the working title The Eejits, revolves around the members of an Irish pub band.

Channel 4 has funded development on the idea, according to trade magazine Broadcast, with the view to ordering a pilot to help shore up its Friday night schedules

Objective Productions is making the show and the executive producer will be Peep Show producer Phil Clarke.

It’s thought Mathews is working on the script with Paul Woodfall, with whom he’s previously collaborated on Big Train and football musical I Keano.

Woodfall and Mathews were once in a band together, The Joshua Trio, a U2 parody set up in the Eighties when they worked together on Dublin listings magazine Hot Press.
