Brand lands role in rehab sitcom

Former heroin junkie Russell Brand has landed a role in a new ITV1 sitcom set in a rehab clinic.

He will play a ‘completely clueless’ crack addict in The Abbey, The Sun reports today.

Former Absolutely star Morwenna Banks is writing the show, inspired by The Priory addiction clinic favoured by celebrities.

Banks also stars as the faded rock star who runs the centre, while former Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow — another former heroin addict — plays her husband.

League of Gentleman star Reece Shearsmith appears as The Abbey’s resident doctor while veteran Royle Family actress Liz Smith plays a geriatric sex addict. Omid Djalili will also make an appearance.

A pilot will soon be shot by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s production company, Baby Cow. Banks most recently played receptionist Vicky in Coogan’s comedy Saxondale.
