New act contest via mobiles

Mobile phone users will be able to watch – and vote on -  clips of unsigned stand-ups as part of a new comedy competition.

Yourcomedystars.tv is auditioning scores of fledgling comics for its talent hunt, and will be recording all the entrants.

Free two-minute clips of their performances will then be available for download on phones or over the web, with users paying if they want to watch the full ten-minute set.

At each stage, public votes decide who goes through to the next round, with a final at the Pleasance during August’s Edinburgh Fringe.

Comics aren’t paid for the clips – and they have to sign over all rights to the videos to organisers BDP Media – but  do stand a chance of winning the £1,000 top prize at the festival. Another £1,000 will go to a voter.

A spokesman for the competition said: ‘This venture will provide a platform for aspiring comedians, providing them with exposure to the public, agents and bookers to launch their careers.

Next auditions are at The Crown pub in Southwark, South London, on April 8 and 9. Details of how to enter are on the yourcomedystars.tv website.
