Benefit show a year after Hardee's death

Stars out for Malcolm

Alternative comedy pioneer Malcolm Hardee is to be remembered in a star-studded benefit show close to the anniversary of his death.

The anarchic stand-up and promoter died in the early hours of January 31 after falling from his boat into Greenland Dock, South-East London, following one of his marathon drinking sessions.

Now Jools Holland, Jo Brand and Simon Day are among the acts lined up for a five-hour memorial show at the Hackney Empire on February 5. Four other big-name acts have also been signed up, but organisers cannot reveal their names.

Malcolm’s friends Arthur Smith, Charlie Chuck and Jim Tavare – who was always booed off at Hardee’s notorious Tunnel Club – are also on the bill.

Hardee has also been honoured with memorial gigs at his Up The Creek comedy club in Greenwich (story) and at the Glastonbury Festival, where his reckless exploits were legendary.

The gig will raise money for his children and creditors. Tickets are available from the Hackney Empire box office on 020 8985 2424.
