Radio's new Mr Comedy

BBC announces new chief

The BBC has appointed the producer of TV comedies People Like Us, Absolute Power and Wild West as its  new head of radio entertainment.

Paul Schlesinger replaces John Pidgeon, who left the role last month after six years to return to programme-making.

The 46-year-oold will be responsible for all in-house comedy and entertainment programmes on BBC national radio, from established favourites such as Just A Minute to developing the talents of  new performers and writers.

He said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to make Radio Entertainment a magnet for talent."

Schlesinger worked on the Radio 4 versions of People Like Us and Absolute

Power before they made their transition to BBC Two. His radio CV also includes The Sunday Format.

The BBC's director of entertainment, Alan Yentob, said: 'We couldn't have hoped for a candidate with more experience and talent than Paul.

'I'm confident that Paul is exactly the right person for this role, and that he will continue to build on the links between radio and television, nurturing our successful shows and bringing new talent to our airwaves."

Director of radio Jenny Abramsky, said: 'I'm delighted to welcome Paul back to radio. Not only does he have a thorough knowledge of radio with many hit series to his name, his experience in television will be invaluable in ensuring that radio continues to play a vital role in providing top-class comedy for its audiences.'
