Hollywood says 'I do'

Studio snaps up wedding Britcom

A low-budget British comedy starring Martin Freeman and Jessica Stevenson  has been snapped up by a Hollywood studio, before it’s even been finished.

Fox Searchlight has bought the worldwide rights to distribute Confetti, in the hope that it’s found the next British comedy success to follow the success of Four Weddings And A Funeral.

Confetti charts the journey of three couples battling it out to win a magazine competition for the most original wedding of the year.

It also stars Julia Davis, Alison Steadman, Alan Partrige’s Felicity Montagu and Jimmy Carr – making his big-screen debut.

The film, directed by Debbie Isitt, was improvised by the actors around a framework of scenes – and is currently in post-production.

Fox Searchlight president Peter Rice told Hollywood  trade journal Variety: “From minute one, we were immediately enamored with Confetti's unique concept and witty execution.”

David Thompson, head of BBC Films which is partly financing the film, called it  "the first fruit of our new focus on comedy films."
