BBC rides spoof soap revival

The BBC is hoping to cash in on the success of the West End remake of Acorn Antiques, by releasing the original TV episodes on DVD.

The spoof soap first appeared 20 years ago this month, complete with wobbly wooden sets and equally wooden acting, as part of Victoria Wood As Seen On TV…

It was released on video five years ago, but has not been available on DVD before now.

Stars of the original TV show – Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston – will be appearing in the new stage version, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Wood takes over the Mrs Overall role from Walters on Monday evenings and Wednesday matinees, and additional roles are played by Josie Lawrence, Neil Morrisey and ally Ann Triplett.

The BBC’s hour-long DVD is released on February 7 three days before the West End show’s official opening. It is priced £15.99, but available from Amazon at £11.99 (click here to buy)
