BBC buys American Dad

Long-awaited animated comedy American Dad is coming to Britain, after the BBC brought the rights.

The show, which debuts in the States in February, is the brainchild of Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane.

It revolves around the life of right-wing CIA agent Stan Smith, who lives with a family including Roger, the space alien he rescued from Area 51, and Klaus, a lascivious, German-speaking goldfish.

The corporation also struck a deal with Fox to air the fourth series of Family Guy, once it has aired in the America next July.

The series had previously been axed by Fox, but revived in the face of strong fan support and impressive DVD sales – the first time a network has performed such a U-turn.

The BBC has also brought the second series of Arrested Development, currently proving a hit on BBC2.

Sue Deeks, of the BBC’s programme acquisition unit, said: "These three comedies have very distinctive takes on family life but they are all equally funny. We are delighted to be bringing them to BBC Television."

And Steven Cornish of added: "We've had tremendous success with our programmes on the BBC and we are delighted to have these three very creative and innovative series with them to continue that success."

The BBC plans to transmit all three series in 2005/6.
