Stand-up Tim Vine is heading for the record books after cracking 499 jokes in an hour.

Judges from the Guinness Book Of Records are now verifying his claim – but it appears to smash the former record of 362, set by Estonian Erkki Kolu at Polva in August 2002.

The performance, at London’s Soho Theatre on Thursday night was designed to promote the launch of Tim’s debut DVD, Tim Vine Live on November 29.

Vine, brother of broadcaster Jeremy, said: “I knew I had enough jokes, it was all about whether I could fit them all into the hour and whether I remembered them all.  I’m looking forward now to re-discovering what the words social and life mean.”

The rules stated that the jokes had to be performed to a paying audience – and each had to get a laugh.
